The Quality of CAD Models

Most CAD models contain many small geometric anomalies not perceptible on the screen. Many are small gaps, overlapping faces, limiting curves not laying exactly on their corresponding faces or not organized as closed loop etc. These anomalies are amplified when the models are used in a model data exchange system, re-used between different engineering software applications, or when using converters or standard IGES or STEP formats.

From poor CAD models to perfect triangulations

The tessellation module is totally insensitive to all the small CAD model imperfections. It generates a perfect triangulation, according to the user needs, and especially it guarantees precision and weathertightness (ex. for manufacturing) The user can also control max length and shape ratio, as well as max angle between two adjacent triangles laying on the same face.

Process Flow

First of all, MeshProcess scan the whole CAD model and creates an intermediate model that is easier to process and clean using only geometric information. As many problems are caused by a lack of or incorrect topology in the CAD model, MeshProcess cleans up the intermediate model and recomputes all the topological relations between faces, according to a specified tolerance for gaps and overlaps ( Assembling Tolerance ). If necessary, this tolerance is incremented according to the number requested (Increment Number).

Note : The tessellation is applied only on the selected CAD model in the explorer.

To tessellate your CAD model:

1.       Import your model (CAD) into the viewer.

2.       Activate and in the toolbar.

3.       Choose Tessellation in the upper left navigation.

4.       The tessellation menu allows the user to set some parameters in order to discretize the CAD model as close as possible to the original geometry.

5.       Tessellation Menu:

---- Buttons ----

Reset : Resets all the parameters to their initial average values relative to the bounding box.

Stl : Sets Ratio and Max Length parameters to a bigger value to minimize the number of triangles, regardless the shape of the triangles.

Remesh : Submits the mesh.

---- Model ----

Replace : The result will replace the selected model in the explorer.

Add : A new fixed model will be created and added into the explorer.

---- Assembling CAD models ----

Tolerance : Increases the tolerance if the CAD model of poor quality (gaps or overlapped faces) in order to get a watertight triangulation. Reduces the tolerance to keep the very small CAD faces.

Increment number : Number of internal iterations to increase the tolerance.

--- Tessellation Parameters ----

Chord error : Maximum distance between the CAD surface definition and its discretized one.

Max Length : Maximum length of the edges of the triangles.

Ratio Triangles : Maximum ratio between the base and the maximum edge length of the triangles (for triangles internals to CAD faces).

Max angle : Maximum angle (degree) between 2 triangles belonging to the same CAD face.
